A hockey stick blade may look simple, but small differences in its shape can noticeably change how the puck feels on your stick. Toe Shape: Round vs. Square

One of the easiest differences to see between hockey stick blades is the shape of the toe.

A round toe creates a smooth transition around the end of the blade. This can be useful for players who frequently manipulate the puck near the toe, particularly during toe drags and quick changes of direction. The rounded profile also allows the blade to rotate naturally as the puck moves toward the end of the stick.

A mid curve places the most noticeable curvature closer to the center of the blade. This creates a versatile puck pocket and can work well for players who move the puck between different areas of the blade.

A toe curve concentrates more of the curve toward the end of the blade. Modern toe-oriented patterns are popular with players who like to pull the puck toward their body before releasing a shot or who frequently control the puck near the toe.

Curve Depth Changes the Puck Pocket

Curve depth describes how dramatically the blade bends.

There is a tradeoff, however. More aggressive curves can require greater blade control when making backhand passes or keeping the puck flat on the backhand side.

Which Hockey Stick Blade Shape Is Best for Puck Control?

There isn’t one blade shape that provides the best puck control for every player.

If you frequently manipulate the puck near the toe and use toe drags or quick-release shots, a toe-oriented blade such as the AB28 may feel natural. If you value predictable passing and frequent forehand-to-backhand transitions, a mid curve such as the AB88 may be a better fit. Players looking for a versatile modern curve may prefer the AB92, while traditional heel and mid-heel patterns such as the AB5, AB7, and AB23 offer distinctly different puck-control characteristics.

Your technique matters just as much as the blade itself. Players develop muscle memory around a particular curve, lie, rocker, and blade profile, which is why changing patterns can initially make familiar movements feel strange.
