A new hockey season means another round of expenses for families. Registration, ice time, travel and tournament fees add up quickly, and growing players have a habit of needing new equipment at exactly the wrong time. This season, there’s another potential pressure on equipment prices: new U.S. tariffs affecting some hockey gear imported from Canada.
Recent reporting from the Associated Press highlighted concerns about what those tariffs could mean for hockey families in the United States. The report noted that equipment prices were already rising before the latest tariffs, including examples from the especially expensive world of goalie equipment. One goalie helmet cited in the report had increased from about $400 in 2022 to $1,000 today.
For families buying from All Black Hockey Sticks, however, there’s some good news. The new Canadian tariffs aren’t changing what you’ll pay for an ABHS hockey stick. And while equipment costs have changed considerably over the years, the original ABHS Senior stick provides a useful point of comparison: it was introduced at $89 in 2011. Fifteen years later, it’s still $89.
What the New Hockey Equipment Tariffs Mean for ABHS Customers
The new tariffs don’t affect every piece of hockey equipment or every manufacturer in the same way. According to the Associated Press, hockey equipment is among the Canadian products affected by the new U.S. tariffs. The report also noted that only a portion of hockey equipment imported into the United States comes from Canada, meaning the effect will vary depending on the product, manufacturer and supply chain.
For ABHS customers, the important part is straightforward. There is no tariff-related price increase on our hockey sticks. That means parents preparing for the season don’t need to factor a new tariff surcharge into the cost of an ABHS stick.
The Original $89 ABHS Stick Is Still $89
All Black Hockey Sticks started in 2011 with a simple idea: offer players a high-quality hockey stick without the price attached to many of the biggest names in the industry. The original ABHS Senior stick sold for $89. Today, the standard ABHS Senior stick still sells for $89.
A lot has changed in hockey since 2011. The cost of equipment, ice time, travel, tournaments and other parts of the game can make each season an increasingly significant investment for families. We’ve continued to focus on giving players another option when it’s time for a stick. That means no tariff surcharge on our sticks and no tariff-related increase to the $89 Senior stick.
Growing Players Shouldn’t Mean Overspending on Sticks
The equipment cycle can be especially tough on youth hockey families. Young players don’t just wear equipment out. They grow out of it. A stick that was the right length and flex last season may no longer be appropriate after a growth spurt. As players get taller and stronger, their stick needs change with them.
ABHS offers several sizes to give young players options as they progress through the game, from Mini Junior and Junior sticks for younger players through Intermediate equipment and eventually a full-size Senior stick.
Mini Junior Hockey Sticks — $39.95
For younger and smaller players, the ABHS Mini Junior provides an affordable starting point. The standard Mini Junior is available in 43-inch and 50-inch lengths with a 35 flex, giving younger players a stick sized more appropriately for them rather than trying to make larger equipment work. At $39.95, it also makes replacing an outgrown stick a little easier to handle.
Junior Hockey Sticks — $68
As players grow, the ABHS Junior provides the next step. The standard Junior is 58.5 inches long with a 50 flex and features one-piece, 100% carbon construction. At approximately 385 grams, it’s designed to give developing players a lightweight stick without jumping to Senior sizing.
Intermediate Hockey Sticks — $84
Intermediate sticks help bridge the sometimes awkward gap between Junior and Senior equipment. The standard ABHS Intermediate measures 61.5 inches and is available in 60 or 70 flex options depending on the blade pattern. At approximately 420–430 grams, it provides another step before a player moves into a full Senior stick.
Senior Hockey Sticks — $89
When a player is ready to make the move to a Senior stick, the standard ABHS Senior remains $89. It’s the same price point that helped launch All Black Hockey Sticks in 2011. Together, the lineup gives families a progression from Mini Junior to Junior to Intermediate to Senior as players grow and their equipment needs change.
One Less Cost to Worry About This Hockey Season
There are plenty of hockey expenses we can’t control. We can’t control registration fees, the price of ice time, travel costs or what other equipment will cost as the season gets underway. We also can’t predict how tariffs or other changes in the market will ultimately affect every piece of hockey gear.
We can control what happens at All Black Hockey Sticks. The new Canadian hockey equipment tariffs aren’t increasing the price of our sticks. And fifteen years after ABHS introduced its original $89 Senior stick, that stick is still $89.
For hockey families preparing for another season, that’s one less price increase to worry about.
